Edinburgh-based Idlewild first gained notice in late 1997 with the angsty cut "Queen of the Troubled Teens." Hope is Important, from 1999, largely replicated the angular grunge of the debut single, but the follow-up, 100 Broken Windows, saw the group stretching out with increasingly sophisticated lyrics and less musical chaos. On The Remote Part, Idlewild further refined its sound, scoring European hits with the melancholy "American English" and the wry "You Held the World in Your Arms." Singer Roddy Woomble and guitarist Rod Jones were the only founding members remaining by 2007's Make Another World, which marked a return to the harder rocking sound of the first two albums.
