British Sea Power

With a Joy Division-esque dour demeanour and insistent hooks, Brighton, England-based British Sea Power were a natural for the hallowed U.K. indie label Rough Trade. Featuring borderline-macabre, gravelly vocals from Scott Wilkinson (aka Yan), the four-piece were an instant critical sensation upon the release of their debut, 2003's THE DECLINE OF BRITISH SEA POWER, featuring the morose-yet-upbeat U.K. chart hit "Carrion." While the band's flamboyant live show polarized rock fans (Nick Hornby was a notable critic), few could deny Yan's songwriting prowess. British Sea Power would go on to pare down its sound a bit, but retained their critical appeal on their third album, DO YOU LIKE ROCK MUSIC.
